LABOUR DAY 2005 - USWA SPOTLIGHT

LABOUR DAY - 2004 -2005 AN AMAZING YEAR
by KEN NEUMANN
Steelworkers National Director for Canada

Copy of Ken Neumann's - Labour Day: 2004-2005 An Amazing Year- message as seen on USWA web site at: http://www.uswa.ca/program/content/2650.php

(Note! - Ken Neumann's BIO can be viewed below)

It just may be an understatement on Labour Day 2005 to say that the last 12 months have been amazing.

Of course there are plenty of challenges, not the least of which is the strike by 1,200 members of Local 480 against Teck Cominco in Trail, BC which, at the time of this writing, was still unresolved after more than a month.

But there have been a number of developments that give us cause to be optimistic and open up new avenues for activism and solidarity.

Neumann
Starting last fall, the merger with the former Industrial Wood and Allied Workers (IWA-Canada), a whole new sector has been added to the union, along with boosting our membership at that time by more than 55,000. More forestry-related workers became Steelworkers in April through the international merger with the Paper, Allied Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union. That merger heralded a formal name change. The union is now the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union. It’s a mouthful, but the short form ID throughout North America is United Steelworkers. It has also meant a change for our website. Go now to www.steelworkers-metallos.ca.

Last November, a year-long campaign to sign former members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees on Canadian National Railway ended successfully with 3,500 CN workers now comprising a national local – 2004. They have a new contract with the railway and a national campaign is now underway to improve health and safety and demand a public inquiry into CN’s practices that have led to several derailments.

Last spring, our union entered into a strategic alliance with the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists. The arrangement involves us in the issue of globalization of culture as well as a range of common issues. ACTRA’s 62 years of experience representing self-employed artists offers valuable insight into how best to represent independent contractors, including truckers and taxi drivers.

Our growing strength in numbers is exactly what the union needs to ensure good collective agreements in all the sectors that we represent and to show unrepresented workers the real advantage of belonging to a large, tough, democratic organization. Numbers obviously also build the union’s most valuable resource, its membership, whose activism ensures that we have a profile in communities across Canada as well as a source of future leadership at every level.

There’s more. Our activists also fuel the political campaigns we undertake to make improvements in all workers’ lives. Besides our "Workers First" campaign to reform Canada’s bankruptcy and insolvency laws, Steelworker rank-and-file lobbyists will be joined on Parliament Hill this fall by our ACTRA partners to lobby MPs in anticipation of a federal election expected later this year or early next. The focus of the lobby will be political parties’ platform and what commitment they have to issues of cultural and economic sovereignty.

One milestone reached over the last year is the 20th anniversary of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund. The Fund is now well established in the international field, and the model of penny-an-hour deductions negotiated into collective agreements has been adopted by other unions. It means individual union members, together with their unions as institutions, are important allies in the struggle against poverty and injustice all over the world. Every Steelworker should feel immensely proud of their role in making a better world possible.

Labour Day is a moment of proud reflection, a re-commitment to the values of work and family, and fun as well. Because, no matter how serious the struggles and the task ahead may seem, our outlook should always be positive, energetic and forward-looking. It’s what makes a union like the Steelworkers a great place to be.

Ken Neumann, Steelworkers National Director for Canada

Born and raised in rural Saskatchewan, Ken Neumann has been a lifelong Steelworker. When he was still a teenager, he was a member of Local 5890 at Ipsco Ltd. in Regina, Saskatchewan, and later was a member of Local 6166 at Inco Ltd. in Thompson, Manitoba.

As a member of Local 4728 (Westank-Willock, Regina), Ken became active as a steward, and later took on other jobs in the local right up to getting elected president. He became an instructor, organizer, and president of the Regina Area Council before being hired as a Steelworker Staff Representative in 1977.

Ken worked for Steelworker members in Saskatchewan and Kimberley, BC, where he built a personal reputation for strong service to Steelworker members in the East Kootenay region.

He ran and won the election in 1989 to replace retiring District 3 Director Len Stevens, and has been returned to office in every election since then, increasing his and the union’s involvement in the labour movement in Western Canada, as well as increasing organizing activity in the union’s largest geographical district.

Ken is active in numerous Canadian and international organizations, including serving as labour co-chair of the Canadian Steel Trades and Employment Congress, President of the Steelworker Trusteed Benefit Plan, President of the Humanity Fund, director of the International Metalworkers Federation (IMF) and ICEM. He is also secretary of the USWA Non-ferrous Industry Conference, chair of the United Dominion Industries Conference and a General Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Security Contractors are just asking for trouble

From Page 1: PHOTO BELOW

They’re still in the area. Whoever brought them in should tell them to leave. They’re just asking for trouble.

With each passing day, union members who have been onn strike since July 19 are becoming more anxious and frustrated, making for hot tempers on the picket line.

Jones said the frustration level is high.

I don’t know why Teck Cominco doesn’t realize it.

Saturday’s demonstration had been peaceful, until the thugs showed up then it became volatile….

Strike Paycheque Pick-Up

Every Thursday, your strike paycheques are available for pick-up at the Union Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We ask that everyone make the effort to pick them up on this day. Arrangements can be made for a family member, close friend or your Picket Captain to pick them up on your behalf, provided they sign for them.

We understand that this policy can be a hardship and in an effort to address this hardship and under extenuating circumstances, the cheques will be available through the Health & Welfare office (upstairs) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the other weekdays.

Membership Communication

We want everyone to realize that communication works two ways! Do not be shy to contact the Union Hall to see what is happening. In an effort to increase communication between the picket line and the Union Hall, your Strategic Planning Committee has asked the Picket Captains to record questions they receive. We will do our best to answer these questions in the following Thursday’s bulletin.

Your Strategic Planning Committee is working with your Strike Committee to contact the Picket Captains if anything is happening and they, in turn, will do a phone fan-out. Please make every effort to make sure your Picket Captain has your phone number and try to show up when asked to.

Barbecue – Thursday, August 25th

When you come to pick up your cheque this Thursday, stay and enjoy our barbecue. Ken Neumann, our National Director; Steve Hunt, Director of District 3, and Jim Sinclair, President of the BC Federation of Labour will all be in attendance and will have a few words to say starting at about 12:00.

New Web Sites and Union Weblog Now Online

We have had several offers of help to update the Local 480 website. Derm Jackman has been working with our computer tech, Jason Taylor, Chair, School of Digital Media, Music and Information Technology - Selkirk College Campus, Nelson, B.C. to revise and update our current website www.uswa480.com and we appreciate their efforts and we would like to get your feedback on the new web site.

As well, Randy McCallum has very generously volunteered his technical experience to build a Local Union President managed weblog site for 9705/.480 which invites you to submit your input. You can visit this site at www.uswlocal480.blogs.com and we appreciate your comments and feedback. We invite you to visit this site and submit your comments.

Randy – your many hours of work at setting up and training us on this new Union President managed easy-to-use powerful Weblog publishing system to keep our union members and community updated on a regular basis, as well as your valued knowledge, expertise and input are very gratefully appreciated! You are a home-town technolgy software design hero and we appreciate that you remember your hometown roots and former days as a Local 480 Union member.

Thank You

First and foremost, we would like to that the membership of both 480 and 9705 for the outstanding support and solidarity that they have shown throughout this labour dispute. Solidarity does work! We have known for a long time and now the public is seeing that this is not the same old Cominco we once knew. Teck does not care about the citizens of this area, the other businesses in the area or the employees and their families. We are witnessing corporate greed in its purest form.

We have been overwhelmed by the generous support of both citizens and businesses alike! Donations of food, money, technical and moral support continue to pour in to our Hall. At the end of our strike, we will be recognizing the support of everyone, but for now --- a HUGE THANK YOU! You have all helped to make a very difficult time a little easier for everyone!

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHTER

On another note, we are still hearing that people are buying into Teck’s argument on Union hours. They would love us to equate this to the size of the membership. These hours, like everything else in our Collective Agreement, were hard fought for and won. These hours were bargained so that we are available to this membership 5 days a week, 8 hours a day and enable this Union to represent you when you need it. Just because we have fewer members, it does not mean that we should not be available when needed. This is not the time to be thinking about any concessions. If we are willing to take concessions now, what will we accept when profits go down because we all know this will happen. If the memberships who came before us did that, we would not be enjoying the pensions, benefits and wages we all have come to take for granted. We have to remain strong and resolve that we will not go backwards.

Remember, this is a tactic commonly utilized by Teck to splinter and weaken the resolve of our membership. Don’t buy into this Company’s manipulation. United, we stand strong!

W.K Labour Day Picnic -- Monday, September 5th at Birchbank Picnic Grounds

Al Graham, President, West Kootenay Labour Council needs volunteers. Call the Union Hall if you can give a couple of hours of your time – let’s help make this a huge success!

In solidarity,

Your Bargaining Committees Locals 480 and 9705, USW
